Children’s Summer Activities at the Museum

There’s plenty of fun at the Museum this summer. Show off your creative talents and join one of our free art and craft sessions where you can have a go at making a felt horse or even your own Horse Guards clock. Or why not come along to one of our story telling sessions and hear the fascinating tale of Cicero the Household Cavalry drum horse who was originally discovered pulling a milk float on the streets of Edinburgh.

Art & Craft Activities

Using paper, clay and needle and thread you can have a go at making either:

  • military buttons
  • finger puppets
  • sewing together a black Household Cavalry felt horse
  • making a special Horse Guards clock

When & Where
The craft activities will take place inside the Museum at 11.30am and 2pm and will run from:

Monday 11 August – Friday 15 August
and Monday 18 August – Friday 22 August.

Running time is approx 45 minutes

  • Sessions are suitable for children over 4 years
  • Admission for children is free if they are accompanied by a paying adult to the Museum.
  • Places are limited to 15 children per workshop

Story telling sessions –

The Tale of the Milk Horse to Drum Horse

Hear the fascinating story of Cicero, one of the most famous drum horses in the Household Cavalry who was originally spotted by Queen Elizabeth II pulling a milk float on the streets of Edinburgh. The sessions will be running throughout the day inside the Museum and will last around 30 minutes.
